Temp mail vs email aliases: when to use which
Temporary inboxes solve one problem. Forwarding aliases solve another. Here is how to decide which one belongs on a form.
Two tools, two jobs
A temporary inbox is short-lived. You generate an address, use it once or twice, and let it expire. A forwarding alias is permanent. It forwards mail to your real inbox and you control it from a dashboard.
Both protect your real address. They are not interchangeable.
Use a temp inbox when
- You need a one-time verification code.
- You want to download a gated PDF.
- You do not trust the site enough to give it any kind of persistent address.
- You will never need to receive a second message at this address.
Use a forwarding alias when
- You want a recurring service to keep emailing you.
- You want to disable a sender later without changing your real inbox.
- You want one alias per vendor so you can tell who leaked your address.
- You want to keep newsletters and receipts out of your primary inbox.
A simple rule
If you might need to reset a password on that account next year, use an alias. If you would not care about losing access tomorrow, a temp inbox is enough.
How Tempo Mail handles both
- Temp inboxes are anonymous, expire automatically, and require no signup.
- Aliases require a free account. The free plan includes 3 aliases; Starter unlocks unlimited.
Pick the right tool for the job and stop giving your real address to forms that do not deserve it.
